The holiday season is certainly a busy time. Between the endless onslaught of parties and social events that seem to come out of the woodwork, mad-dash shopping trips and congested city streets, it can be pretty easy to make it all the way to Christmas Day without taking a moment to relax and bask in the holiday vibe. Why not take an hour this week and enjoy a few carols at one of the several holiday concerts happening across the city? You’ll most likely be happy you did.

The UNB Chorale and UNB Concert Band invite you to celebrate the end of classes and the beginning of the Christmas Season at Memorial Hall on the UNB Fredericton Campus on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 7:30pm.

The band will feature two soloists; one will be the 11 years old singing sensation, Michelle Boyko; the other is one of Canada’s foremost musicians, the 2014 recipient of the Order of Canada, Phil Dwyer on alto sax. The band will also perform a Suite on Canadian folk songs.

Advent Carol Festival at St. Paul’s United Church – December 3, 2014

The 25th Annual Advent Carol Festival, held each year at St. Paul’s United Church (on the corner of George and York), will be held on Wednesday, December 3 at 7:30pm. Twelve local church and community choirs with 300 singers will present a program of new, as well as familiar, Christmas music. This is a fundraiser for the Fredericton Community Food Bank; a freewill offering will be received. The event has raised more $100,000 for area food banks over the past 24 years.

Bel Canto Singers present a Christmas Concert at Christ Church Cathedral – December 6, 2014

The Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton will present a concert of moving and beautiful Christmas music in Fredericton on Saturday, December 6. The Bel Canto Singers, now in its forty-first year, is Fredericton’s premiere mixed voice chamber choir. The choir is performing under the capable direction of Anne Sessa, who brings to the choir, her vast experience in choral performance. Anne has served as director of Bel Canto for six years.

There will be music for everyone; including works by Bruckner, Rutter, Willan, Victoria, Pärt, Hassler, Palestrina and others. As is Bel Canto’s tradition, there will also be seasonal sing-a-long. Bel Canto is accompanied on piano by Carolyn Wagner and there will be additional accompaniment by Steven Peacock on guitar.

Sounds of Christmas: Choeur de Soulanges’ Christmas Concert – December 6 & 7, 2014

Under the artistic direction of Anne Marie Murphy, the musical direction of Jeff Staflund, and a warm and inviting stage set by our talented stage director, Anne Guimond, the Choeur de Soulanges presents its Christmas Concert, Sounds of Christmas. Members of the Fredericton Children’s Chorus and l’École Mimi Musique will join us for the occasion. Get ready to hear all your favorite holiday season songs in a warm and inviting atmosphere on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 7 at 2pm at the Bernard-Poirier Theater, in the Centre Communautaire Sainte-Anne in Fredericton.

Fredericton Choral Society and Fredericton Chamber Orchestra Christmas Concert – December 7, 2014

The Fredericton Choral Society and the Fredericton Chamber Orchestra, with conductor Heather Dunham, will present Seasonal Favourites, featuring highlights from Handel’s Messiah, Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, with guest artists Signa Love (soprano) and Nadia Francavilla (violin).

Fredericton Ladies Choir Concert – December 7, 2014

The Fredericton Ladies Choir will present its annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 7 at 3pm at St. Dunstan’s Church. The program by the 100-voice choir will feature both sacred and popular songs of the season. The choir performs under the direction of Dianne Wilkins and Peter Steeves, with Julie Maston as accompanist.
