Loyalist City Shakespeare Presents The Taming of the Shrew July 18-22, 2017.

SAINT JOHN – Loyalist City Shakespeare, a group of local lovers of everything Shakespeare, have been working on a summertime production of The Taming of the Shrew. For the past several years, the SJTC and Loyalist City Shakespeare have paid an annual tribute to the best-selling fiction author of all time, William Shakespeare.

“Loyalist City Shakespeare formed three years ago to fill a large gap – there was no summer Shakespeare in the local theatre scene!” adds Director Sandra Bell. “The Taming of the Shrew includes all of the regular Shakespearean comedic ingredients: young lovers, crafty servants, multiple disguises, physical comedy, and witty wordplay. Audiences will enjoy the amusing twists and turns in the courtship of the young and beautiful Bianca, as well as the trials of the more serious relationship of her sister Katherine. There’s also a high level of comic physicality in the play.”

“The play will appeal to a wide audience, whether or not they are familiar with this play or with Shakespeare in general. Taming has it all: love and laughs, along with some thoughtful reflection on family and marriage. It’s suitable for ages 10 and up,” adds Sandra Bell.

Funding for The Taming of the Shrew has been provided by The City of Saint John Community Arts Board, UNBSJ, BMO Financial and the Province of New Brunswick.
