The New Brunswick Highland Games return to the grounds of historic Government House for a three day festival celebration of all things Scottish.

The New Brunswick Highland Games return to the grounds of historic Government House this weekend for a celebration of all things Scottish. Dancers, heavy events, pipe band competitions and a variety of cultural engagement activities throughout the three day event make it one of the highlights of the City’s summer event calendar.

Here’s a very quick look at what’s in store:

Friday July 22

The Festival kicks off on Friday with a Ceilidh (party) at the games’ site beginning at 7:30pm. The evening’s entertainment will feature Moncton’s kitchen party-favourites, Les Fireflies, and a crowd-judged mini pipe band contest.

Saturday July 23

Saturday is the first full day of events, kicking off early in the morning with dance, piping and solo drumming competitions. If bagpipes in the morning aren’t your thing, that’s OK. The afternoon will be filled with heavy events and pipe band competitions. Bring a chair, a blanket or sit in the bleachers and enjoy a range of music and unusual feats of strength all afternoon. There will also be a wide range of vendors to explore, food options galore, and ongoing entertainment all day Saturday and Sunday in the Ceilidh Tent.

In the evening, the Saturday Night Ceilidh brings the Festival entertainment downtown to the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market. Starting off with Fredericton’s professional Scottish dance troupe, Shanachie Dance Company, the Ceilidh will kick into overdrive with a performance by Cape Breton’s  JUNO Award nominees, Beòlach. This super group has captivated audiences from across the globe with their innovative and exciting arrangements of traditional Cape Breton, Scottish and Irish tunes. This is a must see event!

Sunday July 24

Let’s do it again. If you haven’t already had your fill of kilts and bagpipes (or maybe you’ve just discovered your insatiable appetite for both!), the fun continues on the grounds of Government House all day with workshops, live entertainment, a kids corner and a lot more.

Come see for yourself why the New Brunswick Highland Games is such a popular city favourite!
