Imperial Theatre Launch Monthly Retro Film Series

The Imperial’s new film series features a week of free daytime screenings during March Break.

The Imperial Theatre has long been the heartbeat of Saint John’s performing arts scene. And even in these uncertain times when national touring acts are non-existent and audiences are weary of committing to much of anything, the theatre continues to create opportunities to get out and engage in some entertainment whenever possible, with an obvious nod to current health and safety restrictions.

This month, Imperial staff have announced the latest series of titles in its ongoing classic film series. With over 800 seats available, social distancing for a night of onscreen entertainment couldn’t possibly be easier.

“The Retro Film Series is really important with the limitations handed to all of us with COVID restrictions,” said Bethany Stout, assistant executive director and marketing and communications manager for Imperial Theatre. “It is more cost effective for us to screen a film than to present a four-piece band, and for right now, that is really helpful. We want to offer whatever enjoyment that we safely can during these rough times. But, we are still trying to give artists work. We have been approved to welcome working artists to Imperial from PEI and Nova Scotia. So as long as they can get to us, we will make it happen.”

At the present time, the entire province is under Orange Phase restrictions due to a recent upsurge in COVID-19 infections. All events at Imperial Theatre are cancelled or postponed until January 14 when the situation will be reassessed.

“As of today and until January 14 we are not presenting, but will reassess daily and open as soon as it is deemed safe,” said Stout.

An upcoming performance by Jamie Comeau & the Crooked Teeth and the Hammond River Collective, originally scheduled for January 16, have been rescheduled for May 28.
