Fredericton string quartet to host candlelight performances in Fredericton and Saint John this week.

In celebration of their third anniversary, the Elm City String Quartet is adding a special touch to their upcoming series of concerts on December 21 and 22. In light of the season, the Fredericton-based quartet will perform by candlelight, playing an assortment of light classical favourites, holiday tunes, and some hidden gems that fit nicely with the season.

The Elm City String Quartet is midway through their first full season of programming.  Previous concerts have included pieces by Beethoven, Glass, Montgomery, Brahms, & Britten.  The quartet’s Candlelight concert will feature holiday arrangements and pieces by Handel, Tchaikovsky, and Vivaldi.  “We wanted to do something special this season and we figured you can’t go wrong with candles and nice quartet music.” Mark Kleyn, violist.

The Elm City String Quartet held their first concert three years ago, performing in a packed Gallery 78 on a cozy winter night. “That was one of my favourite performances.  The room was packed with friends and family,” said cellist Emily Kennedy. “There was hot cider, and we were really excited to play music. It was just so heart-warming. When we were planning our upcoming concerts, we wanted to keep a similar vibe. It will be a larger space, but we want the evening to feel special.”
