Elm City String Quartet Announces First Full Season

Category: music 212

The Elm City String Quartet’s first full season will include five concerts, each performed in Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John.

The Fredericton-based Elm City String Quartet have been making a name for themselves since their debut concert in 2019.  Starting a new ensemble during ‘unprecedented times’ was certainly limiting for the group.  Even so, the quartet has kept their ensemble going with one-off concerts here and there.  Now, with the world feeling a bit more predictable, the quartet is releasing their first full season of concerts.

The season will include five concerts, each performed in Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John.  The season will feature classic favourites like Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart, but will also include explorations into more contemporary works by composers like Barber, Britten, Montgomery, and Glass.

The quartet has done a few things to make their opening season special.  They will be performing a holiday concert in December; a candle-lit evening of seasonal music to welcome winter.  To finish the season off with a bang, the quartet will be collaborating with pianist Carl Philippe Gionet to perform the massive Piano Quintet by Shostakovich, as well as other pieces.

“We’re really excited to finally be releasing the whole season,” says violist Mark Kleyn. “We’ve programmed some of our favourite pieces, and we can’t wait to share them with audiences this year.”

The Elm City String Quartet is comprised of Victor Vivas (violin), Mercedes Salazar (violin), Mark Kleyn (viola), and Emily Kennedy (cello).  Hailing from many different parts of the world, the quartet-members have found a musical connection with each other in Fredericton.  Some perform in indie bands and compose multimedia works; some are renowned international pedagogues; but all are passionate chamber music players, Sistema NB Teaching Artists, and are active teachers in their community.  The quartet, being a versatile group, has performed in art galleries, churches, and even small house concerts.  The group has also been fortunate to perform at MusicUNB and the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival.

Tickets for the Elm City String Quartet’s season are on sale now.  Tickets for individual concerts and season passes are available at the quartet’s website: www.elmcitystringquartet.ca.
