A screen has been setup in the parking lot of the Delta Hotel in Fredericton following the hotel’s announced plans to open a drive-in theatre.

It’s been a while since Fredericton has had a drive-in theatre to call its own. From the 1950s up until the mid to late 80s, Fredericton movie goers could enjoy big screen entertainment from the comfort of their front seats.

During the format’s heyday, Fredericton had three drive-in theatres. The Vallery Drive-In located on the Woodstock Road and the Sunset Drive-In on Sunset Drive both dated from the 1950s. The Brookside Drive-In, located on the corner of Brookside Drive and Killarney Roads opened in July of 1979 and was the first to close less than a decade later.  There were even drive-ins in Oromocto and Minto.

Is Fredericton ready for the return of drive-in theatres? On May 12, the Delta Fredericton posted a message to its Facebook page announcing plans to open a pop-up drive-in in the hotel’s parking lot in June. There have been nearly 1000 comments on the post that has been shared over 2000 times.

As of this week, a screen has been constructed and signage is going up.

Yesterday, an announcement was made outlining plans for the theatre’s grand opening June 6 that will include a meal in addition to the feature film.

The drive-in will run every weekend during the summer months with space limited to 50 cars per night. Tickets go on sale Friday May 22 via eventbrite.

Upcoming Films:

June 4 – 6: The Goonies
June 11 – 13: Dumb and Dumber
June 18 – 20: Footloose
June 25 – 27: Forrest Gump
