I went to see the Dayglo Abortions at the Capital in August of this year. Opening for them were locals Scumlord and Rectum of Pain. Rectum of Pain you say? That made me chuckle thinking about all of the Grindcore bands I used to listen to with similarly charming names. If I’m being completely honest, I don’t think I had super high expectations, in fact, I may have said, “Man, this is gonna right suck”. They opened the show, and a tall man with no eyebrows and a mullet, donned a large beige housecoat took to the stage. Then the housecoat came off revealing leather underwear, nope scratch that, an adult diaper painted black. At this point, I was already thrilled to the point that I was nearly manic. Then he smashed the mic on his forehead and drank from a penis bottle. Good times.

When the music started it didn’t ‘right suck’, not even a little bit. It was fun, sweaty, loud, fast, and obscene in the very best way – all the crucial elements of a great punk rock band. It was a pretty big lesson in being aware of assumptions for me, as their performance ended up being the highlight of the show and left me wanting more.  I’ve seen Rectum of Pain again since and they never fail to disappoint. Fake poop, tricycles, other antics, and as someone noted, “GG Allin is alive and well!”. That may not be a super great thing for a lot of folks but it’s high praise for these local punx.

On December 18th, there will be a cd release for their debut, Dickered, Dinked, and Derelict at the Elk’s Club. Come for the antics, and stay for a punk rock assault that will melt your face off. You’ll be pleasantly surprised and will probably find that Rectum of Pain are a force to be reckoned with and one of the most exciting bands in Fredericton right now. Songs like Fuck A Man’s Dick and Blood Drunk will leave your rectum scorched with punk-metal fury.
