A Tale As Old As Time

TNB Theatre School’s Senior Musical Theatre students bring Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to the Fredericton Playhouse stage.

Theatre New Brunswick concludes its 2017-2018 season with a production of the award-winning Disney musical production, Beauty and the Beast, on stage at the Fredericton Playhouse, April 26-28, 2018.

“Beauty and the Beast is one of the most successful Broadway shows of our time, and certainly the very best of Disney,” said the show’s director Tania Breen.  “It has it all – a sweeping musical score, epic battles, hilarious romps, romance, magic and finally, the power of love to transform.  It also demands the very best that TNB can bring to the table – an incredible orchestra, an epic stage and costume design, and a big dose of theatre magic.   We are having a lot of fun and pulling out all of the stops.  It has been a thrill to take on this beast!”

The Senior Musical Theatre (SMT) program at TNB Theatre School is made up of students grades 9 and up, the most advanced and accomplished performers from TNB Theatre School’s 200+ students. Many of these students have been with the theatre school since entering the public school system.

In addition to providing students the opportunity to bring to life one of Disney’s most beloved musicals in a professional environment, Jones is also excited by the story’s parallels with the world today.

“It’s been just over ten years since the last time the Theatre School staged a production of Beauty and the Beast,” said Jones.  “It’s a story full of hilarious, beautiful and moving song and at the same time, this story also makes some really interesting comments about how mob mentality works and how it is that perhaps we want to destroy what we fear and we fear what we don’t understand.”

Each Senior Musical Theatre production marks the end of Theatre New Brunswick’s season and continues to be one of the most popular productions of the whole year.  For this production, students are given the company’s full support as a way of providing the most professional theatre experience for both the audience and the performers.  This year’s students will be supported by professional lighting, projection, set and wardrobe designers in addition to a full orchestra.

“This production offers tons of opportunity for the students to engage in massive sprawling dance scenes as well as offering some really meaty lead roles as well,” said Jones.  “I think the students are in for a treat, we as an audience are in for something special as well and this will be a great way to round out the year and something the whole family can enjoy!”
