Here’s our big list of things happening this spring.  For anyone who feels like “nothing ever happens in Fredericton”, here are just a few of the many events, festivals, trade shows, musical happenings and dance extravaganzas coming up in the next few months. Get into it!

Artifact (re)Make Exhibition & Auction | Charlotte Street Arts Centre | April 10, 2015 | More Info

In celebration of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s 10-Year Anniversary, 35 artists from Fredericton and beyond have turned Charlotte Street School artifacts into works of art!

Hand-hammered nails, architectural beams, and original window panes date back to 1884-1885 when the Charlotte Street School was first constructed. 130 years later, artifacts are (re)made into part of our new legacy, opening the doors of creative expression to all. Featuring the work of Janice Wright Cheney, Brigitte Clavette, Kristen Bishop, Jane Geurts, Bruce Gray and more, the Artifact (re)Make Exhibition & Auction raises funds to ensure the long-term vitality of Fredericton’s only community arts centre.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake is a great team-building event for employees. Form a team with your business and compete with other teams from the community to raise the most dollars or show the most team spirit at the bowling event. Hall of Fame goaltender Ken Dryden will be the guest speaker at the second annual Peter Gzowski Literacy Dinner to be held Monday, April 13 at the Delta Fredericton. Other special guests for this event include renowned CBC Broadcaster Shelagh Rogers and the always funny Marshall Button as our emcee.

The Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) events for literacy are major fundraising events held in every province and territory. This year’s first annual literacy dinner held in the capital city in August raised more than $50,000 and the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick has raised more than $1.6 million dollars for literacy since the inception of PGI in NB.

An evening filled with fun entertainment, excitement and a lot of laughter is what is promised in this year’s edition of the Leo Hayes High School’s Lion King Competition. LHHS grade 12 male students will compete to take home the honour of being named the “Lion King”. This annual competition which is a Safe Grad fundraiser sees the candidates performing a choreographed dance as a group as well as individual talents in front of their admiring fans and the judges. Some of the talents are surprisingly good while all are very entertaining! There is a fashion show section of the Competition as well where the candidates get to “strut their stuff” while looking great in fancy clothing. Just before the judges go off to deliberate, the candidates are posed with impromptu questions which always guarantees a few laughs. The conclusion of the night is when the Lion King and his Court – the Prince of Popularity, the Duke of Cool, the Court Minstrel, the Court Jester and Mr. Congeniality are announced. Come out for a fun evening of entertainment and support LHHS Safe Grad because these guys just cannot wait to be King….!

Soviet dissident Alexander Ivanov has been imprisoned in a mental hospital until he admits that the statements he has made against the government were caused by a mental disorder. He shares a cell with a schizophrenic triangle player, also called Ivanov, who believes he is in command of a symphony. There’s farce, there’s tragedy, and there’s an orchestra!

Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings, two teenage girls who spent 19 terrifying hours in the waters of the freezing Atlantic Ocean on an upturned lifeboat. On Friday, September 13, 1940, a ship named The City of Benares set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war-torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only 11 of the evacuees survived, including Beth and Bess.  Performed by Catherine Wheels Theatre Company (UK), this award-winning play tells a story of courage, survival and enduring friendship that inspires audiences of all ages.

After a very successful first year on the new course, which encompasses much of the downtown core, the Scotiabank Fredericton Marathon and the City of Fredericton is pleased to announce that it will hold the 37th annual marathon and all other distances on the same route as last year.  2014 brought us a 25% increase in participants over 2013.

The course will continue to utilize the City’s vast trail system while also highlighting some of the picturesque residential architecture in Fredericton. The marathon course is Boston certified, and continues to draw athletes who want to achieve a qualifying time on this very flat and fast course.

Rib Fest is a festival type event with free admission to the public. Attendees are just responsible to pay for their own food, drinks, and other activities. Entry on to the grounds and watching the entertainment is absolutely free. Ribfests are very popular across Ontario and attract thousands of spectators each year.

On May 28-31, 2015, the Capital Exhibit Centre will host the second annual Rib Fest. Professional “Ribbers” from Ontario competed with local food vendors in food based competitions. Live music and inflatable games were provided for a truly family friendly environment. In the first year of the event, over 70,000 people visited the grounds.

Maritime Countryfest (MCF) is an intimate open air festival located in the heart of New Brunswick’s Capital City; Fredericton. Each June, historic Officers’ Square undergoes an amazing transformation to make welcome local, emerging, Canadian and International Country Music performers.

MCF is a licensed event accessible to all. Attendees have the option to purchase single day tickets or an event pass that gives the access to both days. The event is general admission and offers a wheelchair accessible area as well as bleacher & picnic table seating. There are a variety of food vendors on site to make sure everyone is well fed throughout the event.

Come here the Drum Beat of Mother Earth and listen to the voices of the ancestors of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people. Their culture and language is a beautiful part of New Brunswick and they will sharing their culture through song & dance. As founders of the land hundreds of years ago they are celebrating the gifts from the creator. Their beautiful regalia express their honour to the father sky & mother earth. The First Nation people of the Sitansik, St. Mary’s, will demonstrate their love for their culture. Performers include Muskrat Singers and Dancers, Men’s traditional, Women’s Jingle Dress and Ladies Fancy Shawl dancers. These performers along with many others and Crafters/vendors can be found at the Annual St. Mary’s Which will take place at the St. Mary’s First Nation Old Reserve, Union St., Fredericton North Side.
