Saint John Theatre Company present ‘a witty, sexy and timeless tale’, the second Main Stage production in the company’s 2017-2018 season.

(Saint John) Saint John Theatre Company is ramped up to present the modern romantic comedy that has captured the hearts of audiences world-wide – Shakespeare In Love.

The story follows the life of a young Willliam Shakespeare, out of cash and ideas, as he meets his ideal woman who then inspires him to transform his latest work, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter, into one of his most famous plays. The play is a wildly playful, funny, and romantic work of historical fiction based on the popular film that offers a unique re-telling of the Romeo and Juliet story.

Directed by Sandra Bell, the show is packed with talent from near and far, featuring professional actors raised in the greater Saint John area Emily Bartlett as Viola, Shakespeare’s love interest and Alex Goldrich as William Shakespeare.

“Shakespeare in Love is a beautiful invention of what might have inspired Shakespeare to write Romeo and Juliet,” says director Sandra Bell. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of bringing this large and complex play from the page to the stage. It is a fast-paced show, where scenes blend from one to another, and a number of the cast perform multiple roles. There is dancing, sword fighting, and even a dog!”

Shakespeare In Love will run at Imperial Theatre from March 21-24 offering both evening and matinee options. Tickets are on sale at Imperial Theatre box office:
