Acclaimed Appalachian banjo/fiddle duo touring the Maritimes this month. 

 

Richie Stearns has made a career as one of the foremost purveyors of Appalachian folk and old-time American roots music.  A highly sought after collaborator and teacher, he has performed alongside some of the genre’s most respected musicians and has worked with everyone from Pete Seegar, Bela Fleck, and Natalie Merchant to jazz great Bill Frisell, bluegrass legend Peter Rowan and South African afro-pop star Johnny Clegg.

For the past four years he has been performing as Richie and Rosie, a partnership with fiddler Rosie Newton that blends old-time tradition with traditional and original songs.

Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton are a dynamic duo performing music rooted in the Americana tradition. Over the past four years they have collaborated in various projects and formed the duo after hours of jamming in Stearns’ kitchen, experimenting with traditional and original songs. Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton take the fiddle, banjo combination to new levels as they continue to expand the boundaries of this tradition. Richie Stearns is a legendary banjo player and singer, and has led bands including The Horse Flies, and Donna the Buffalo. He has also played with countless others, and tours with Natalie Merchant. He is steeped in the traditions of American old -time music, Appalachian folk, blues, African, rock, and country music. Rosie Newton is a talented fiddler and singer. She has toured with The Duhks, Louisiana legend Preston Frank, Red Dog Run, Th e Evil City Stringband, Home Remedy, The Pearly Snaps and occasionally Celtic all-star band, Ferintosh. She has also made a career in teaching at various music camps across the country.
