Fredericton’s community radio station hopes to encourage conversation through on-air book club.

“This is an initiative that I tried to get off the ground before, but I was making it more difficult than it had to be,” said CHSR Station Manager Erin Bond. “This time we’re keeping it super simple. Pick a book, read it, and talk about it on air.”

Participation is simple and the club is open to anyone interested. Books will be chosen through a Facebook poll and readers will be invited to discuss the title in a conversation that will be recorded an edited for the air.

“I understand a lot of people might not be comfortable going live on-air,” said Bond, “so we’ll pre-record our conversation. This will also help us accommodate as many people’s schedules as possible.”

The commitment is to read one book a month and then patriciate in a discussion.

Bond hopes the initiative will also draw interest from those who simply have an interest in reading but have no interest in joining the on-air discussion.

“We’ll also be publicly announcing the book we’re reading so others can read along and tune in at a specific time to hear our discussion. Think of it like Mass For Shut-Ins, but with novels.”

The first title will be a thriller and is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Anyone interested in joining the CHSR Book Club should contact Bond directly via email. Those who wish to read along at home should keep an eye on the station’s Facebook for title announcements.
