This weekend’s roundup features three theatre productions, a pay-what-you-wish show at the Playhouse, family art day at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and lots of live music.

Friday

Symphony New Brunswick at the Fredericton Playhouse. The Symphony begins a new season of its Bravo series with guest conductor Janna Sailor and cellist Denise Djokic. Enjoy music by Tchaikovsky and Schubert and others. 7:30 p.m.

Marian at The Tipsy Muse Café.  Marian play their last hometown show of the year this Friday at The Muse. Come give ‘em some love and attention. 7 p.m.

Punks 4 Paws at The Capital. An annual punk rock fundraiser for the local SPCA, this evenings lineup features performances by Pisshorse, Small Package, The Helfiends and the SNAP Burlesque Review. 9 p.m.

Theatre UNB presents Daniel MacIvor’s Never Swim Alone at Memorial Hall. MacIvor’s fast-paced comedy introduces Frank and Bill, two egotistical men in suits locked in a ruthless competition of verbal one-upmanship under the scrutiny of a female lifeguard who acts as referee. As their sparring becomes more intense and violent, Never Swim Alone unveils a dark secret behind the curtains of comedy and drama. This play was directed and produced by senior UNB Drama students Alexe LaPointe and María Ingrahm. 7:30 p.m.

1979 (Theatre New Brunswick) at the Open Space Theatre. Theatre New Brunswick kick-off a brand new season this month with 1979 by Canadian playwright Michael Healey. Step inside the office of Prime Minister Joe Clark for this laugh-out-loud comedy packed with events and colourful characters from Canada’s political past. 7:30 p.m.

House Concert with Salil Subedi at 41 River Front Way. Salil is currently on tour in Canada and we are excited to welcome him to Lansdowne Concert Series. No doubt, this concert will be like none other! We invite you to be part of this exciting evening and expose yourself and friends to his magical music, his storytelling, his pedagogy and his creative spirit. Subedi works as an independent musician, performing artist and a writer. He is a pioneer in introducing Didgeridoo in the Nepali fusion music genre, Nepali theatre, and performance-art. As a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, his current focus is on Singing Bowls, overtone music, and their application in music therapy and meditation. Saturday

Rachel Beck with the Atlantic String Machine at the Fredericton Playhouse. Glowing with catchy pop hooks, Rachel Beck’s distinctive piano melodies and emotive vocals are captivating audiences across Canada. The Prince Edward Island songbird’s first single, Reckless Heart, hit #1 on the CBC Music Top 20 after earning the most online votes for six weeks straight. Beck’s multi award-winning debut lures listeners into an ethereal and enveloping soundscape, as the songs take you on a trek across a wide emotional range – from regret and grief to wonder and joy.

In this special concert, Rachel will be performing in harmony with Atlantic String Machine. Known for their other pop music collaborations, ASM produces their own concert series each season and enjoys collaborating with musicians across musical genres, including jazz guitarist Duane Andrews, pop group Paper Lions, folk group The Once and singer songwriters such as Matthew Byrne. 7:30 p.m. Pay What You Wish.

Campbell + Green at The Tipsy Muse Café. Cailin Green + Robert Campbell have been touring Canada and Europe sharing their songs & stories for the last 7 years. Their last album, On Being Human, recently won the International Singer-Songwriter Associations 2019 Album of the Year Bronze Award in Atlanta, GA. Their work features their strong harmonies and clever songwriting that engages the listener with messages of inclusion & change, love & loss and insights on the human condition. 7 p.m.

The Cap Halloween Party at The Capital. Two floors of fun. Wilser’s Room: Caveboy, Dumpster Cub and Fungus. The Phoneix: Emo Night! The Capital Bar: DERB, Fractal Code, Geometic, Lwecid, Baggs and Moon Druid. 9 p.m.

O’Me Nerves Comedy Series Presents: Testosterone Take Back! At Grimross Brewing Co. Testosterone Take Back! You saw the fierce ladies of Estrogen invade our stage in September, and now the men are going to take the stage back from the ladies. Or will they? All proceeds stay in Fredericton to help support funding for our mental health programs. 7 p.m.

Sunday

Family Art Day at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Bring the family and enjoy free workshops and a storytelling event as part of this month’s Family Art Day. 12-5 p.m. Free.

Late Harvest: Music for Two Guitars at Wilmot United Church. Plan to join classical guitarists Steven Peacock and Gerry Van Wart for a varied concert of music to celebrate the harvest and the colours of the season in the sanctuary of Wilmot United Church. You’ll hear music by Pasquini, Fauré, Domeniconi and Tisserand, as well as by the performers. Admission is by voluntary contribution; all are welcome. 3 p.m.

Fall Indies Introduce Event at Westminster Books. You are cordially invited to the fall Indies Introduce Event. Join in to celebrate favourite titles from debut authors and other undiscovered gems. Free Public Talk: Jean Campagnard: NB’s 17th Century Witch & Trial at Provincial Archives.  Fredericton Heritage Trust presents a free talk by Stephanie Pettigrew. There will be free parking and light refreshments. All are welcome. 2:30 p.m.

Celebrating 20 Years of Nasty Shadows with two plays at Memorial Hall. Nasty Shadows Theatre Company present This is a Play written by Daniel MacIvor and Action written by Sam Shepard. There will also be a staged reading of scenes from a work-in-progress, Standing at Opposite Ends are Ducky & Murdock, written by Scott Shannon. This is a seemingly simple story about a young woman and young man in love during wartime, but with a Nasty touch from the Shadows. We will be sharing a couple of scenes from this ongoing work-in-progress. 7:30 p.m.
